Charles Dowding is a revered name in the world of horticulture, particularly known for his revolutionary no-dig gardening approach, the same approach we use here at the Organic Black Isle Garden. Charles, a British organic gardener, author, and educator, has been transforming the conventional norms of cultivation for over three decades. Dowding has authored several books, providing insights into his low-impact, highly efficient gardening techniques. His method not only reduces labour but also enhances soil health and crop productivity.
At our upcoming workshop, "Exploring Efficient, No-Dig Gardening", at Black Isle Brewery's organic farm, Dowding will be sharing his expertise. Participants will have the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the principles and application of no-dig gardening, encouraging more sustainable practices for our future farming and gardening community.
The day includes a detailed description of no dig and how it works, together with many ways of making compost, dealing with weeds, and saving time through finding many shortcuts. All of Dowding’s methods are based on experience and he explains the reasons why they are so effective, including minimal rotation of plants.
We shall also be out in JJ’s vegetable garden and greenhouse, no dig for three years. There is much to see there, a great learning experience.
